seo tips and tricks

I'm coming clean and now admitting I am a recovering SEO addict. For over a year and a half I tried to crack the code of SEO, but to my dismay, I realized I was spending more time trying to figure it and less time working on content.

In this episode I am going to go over some of my favorite SEO tips and also some SEO myths. This is part one, so stay tuned for more SEO strategies in future episodes.

picking a niche

Picking a Niche Episode #35

Picking a Niche Episode #35 Show Notes:

Picking the right niche is extremely critical when getting a game plan together for a new website.

A few key pointers in picking a niche are:

  • Is it something you have a passion for? This in my eyes is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle. If you do not have any love for the niche your getting into than how can you sincerely write about it. If writing an article is like getting your teeth pulled I don't see how excellent your articles will be. You can have other writers write for you, but if you are diving into unchartered waters make sure you have your plan tightened up.
  • Make it something that is not over saturated. This is a tricky one because I would never want to tell someone they cant do something because a niche is over saturated. If you have the know how and resources to compete in a highly competetive niche then go for it.
  • Is the juice worth the squeeze? This being said, make sure that there is somewhat of a targeted audience for your niche. It doesn't have to be thousands of people, you just have to make sure you're reaching a good amount of people.
  • Be creative and be yourself! When you pick a niche make sure you are able to put your personal stamp of approval on it. This being said, if you think it is a good idea and you want to do it a certain way…than do it.
  • You don't have to invent something, you just have to make it better. – I learned this from Pat Flynn. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, you just have to think how can I make my particular niche better? This was a heart felt decision for me because there is so much garbage out in the online world that I am determined to bring some light to it.

essence

Essence and Identity Episode #34

Essence and Identity Episode #34

This is a very important topic for me. I discuss the importance of realizing the difference between essence and identity.

If we had to walk around with name tags that described not how we saw ourselves, but how others viewed us it would be an extreme eye opener.

Identity is how we are seen by others. At one point in my life my identity was a great service advisor in the automobile industry. The truth being that I don't even like cars and had no passion for the business. 17 years I stayed in the same business. Get up, go to work, make a good wage and go home. I was comfortable, my family was comfortable.

The question is what is comfortable?

I truly despised working in the automobile industry. I was told by numerous people that I could not do anything else, I should stay where I was.

This was drilled in my head not only by other people but eventually by myself.

If you let others dictate your future you're not going to live within your essence.

I ended up leaving the car business. I do miss a lot of great people but I did what I had to do.

The year following my departure from the car business was one of the most trying periods of my life. I went from making $57,000 a year to roughly $3,000 the first year. The beauty behind this is that I learned so much in that year that it would start to shape my direction.

Pay it Forward – Episode #33

Pay it forward – Episode #33

Have you ever heard the saying “don't forget where you came from”?

This Episode of Marketing the Practical Way is a shout out to all the people who do something for someone else with no intention of getting something in return.

Fact is, too many times we expect something in return. If we all flipped the switch and did something to help someone else move forward in their life it would make the world just that much better.

You are what you Promote – Episode #32

You are what you Promote – Episode #32

you are what you promote

The good old saying “you are what you eat” is so true. The same goes for what you promote to your customers. If you don't believe in a product than you should not promote it.

The biggest thing I don't think internet marketers understand is that you may get a quick buck here and there promoting junk, but the longevity and loyalty of your customers wont be there.

jay neill interview

Jay Neill Talks SEO and Stunt Doubling – Episode #31

Jay Neill Talks SEO and Stunt Doubling – Episode #31

When I have an SEO Question I think of a few people who I know I can get a straight forward answer from. One of those people I send a message to is Jay Neill. Jay is a master at SEO and always steers me in the right direction.

I was super stoked about having Jay on Marketing the Practical Way because he is straight forward and to the point. I actually was surprised by some of his other endeavors such as being a stunt double for Alan Cumming in X-men 2. If you don't know who Alan Cumming is, he plays Night Crawler in the movie. Check out the killer action scene below.

Jay credits his mad skills in X-men 2 because he was a national team member for the Canadian Men's Gymnastics team.

He also credits his gymnastics training for his affiliate success as well. Jay said it “helped me with discipline and focus”.

Jay is also the head live trainer at Wealthy Affiliate University. Jay told me he “bumped into Carson (of WA) at Costco within the 1st month of me joining WA. At the time, I wasn't aware that Carson and Kyle lived in the same city as me. We stuck up a conversation and have been great friends ever since. Carson and Kyle are the founders of Wealthy Affiliate.

In this interview Jay gives some really great information on SEO and where he thinks it is heading in the future. Jay also talks about the recent changes that Google has made. He also talks about certain things a new affiliate marketer should avoid.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to write that he also has a black belt in Kenpo. I guess you could say he's the Jeff Speakman of affiliate marketing.

So get your pen and paper out and get ready to take some notes because Jay has some tremendous insight!

Enjoy,
